The incident is said to have occurred at 8:30am on Tuesday near River Katonga, close to a Police check point. Police said a bus, Reg No UBB 195M, belonging to Global Coaches company collided head-on with a truck, Reg No. UAY 069W. Two people died on spot. However, according to Joseph Tulya, the Acting Police spokesperson for Katonga Region, the dead have not been identified as they did not possess their identification documents at the time of the accident. Their bodies were taken to Mulago national hospital for postmortem, Tulya said. At least 20 people sustained injuries and were rushed to Nkozi hospital. Tulya attributed the accident to over speeding by the bus driver. The accident comes barely a week after another Kampala-bound Global Coaches bus swerved off the road and rammed into a house in Mpugwe in Kalungu district. The bus, which was moving from Mbarara at the time, failed to brake, leading to the accident. There were no fatalities. According to the recently released Annual Police Crime Report, road accidents reduced by 3 percent in 2018 compared to 2017. However, cases that resulted into fatalities increased by 4.7 percent. The same report indicated that 39 percent of the people who died as a result of motor accidents were pedestrians, 28 percent were passengers and 28 percent were cyclists. The leading causes of these road accidents, according to the same report, are reckless and driving, careless pedestrians and vehicles that are in poor mechanical conditions.
