The President of the Republic and the First Lady celebrate 48 years of marriage

His Holiness Pope Francisco’s Nuncio for Cameroon and Equatorial Guinea, Piero Pioppo, said mass to mark the feast of the Virgin of Guadalupe, the Patron of the city of Mongomo, on 12th December, a date which coincides with the canonical wedding anniversary of H. E. Obiang Nguema Mbasogo and Constancia Mangue Nsue Okomo.


In addition to government authorities, the mass was also attended by the Archbishop of Malabo, Monsignor Juan Nsue Edjang, and various priests, deacons and Christians from the area.

In the homily, the Papal representative told the story of the Virgin of Guadalupe, who appeared in Mexico over 500 years ago. During the mass, various children received their first communion, and a group of girls gave a rendition of the appearance of the Virgin of Guadalupe. The religious ceremony will continue on 13th , with a requiem mass in memory of the deceased in Mongomo.


At 14:00, H. E. Obiang Nguema Mbasogo received Piero Pioppo in the Leaders’ Club. Their conversations focussed on Church-State relations. Pioppo also congratulated the presidential couple on the 48th anniversary of their wedding vows. The Archbishop of Malabo, Monsignor Juan Nsue Edjang, was in the audience.

Finally, the Head of State and the First Lady offered a reception for the guests, in their private residence in Kohete.
