Mamelodi Sundowns took one step closer to their eighth PSL title as they beat defending champions, Bidvest Wits 2-0 at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday.

The hosts came into the contest with one hand on the title, and looked to get even closer to the title as they launched an attack early on – with Tebogo Langerman shooting wide, before Sibusiso Vilakazi forced his Bafana teammate, Darren Keet into a reflex save from close range – all within the first 10 minutes.

They were eventually rewarded in the 19th minute, as Percy Tau burgled the ball in the midfield, towards the center line, before taking the ball to the edge of the box, where he released a perfectly weighted pass into Zwane’s path for the opener.

Twenty minutes later, the lead was doubled, with Tau again providing the assist, as he released Sibusiso Vilakazi, who rounded off the move with a cool finish.

Tau remained an ever-present threat to the Wits defence, prompting Edwin Gymah to try taking him out with some judo tactics in the second half. The defender was lucky to walk away with just a yellow card.

Gymah would go from villain to hero in the 81st minute as, with Keet beaten by Thapelo Morena, he was on hand to provide a last gasp tackle to keep the scoreline respectable.

Cape Town City 0-0 Supersport United

Cape Town City hosted the struggling Supersport United at Cape Town Stadium, and the two sides had to settle for a share of the spoils as neither side could make the breakthrough.

The home side were looking for their first win in seven attempts, having recently broken a five game losing run with a draw against Maritzburg United, while Supersport have not registered a victory since 24 February, when they defeated Bloem Celtic to emerge 4-2 victors.

The first half was a dreary affair as no shots on target were recorded from either side, with both teams looking incapable of delivering the killer blow.

City keeper, Sage Stephens was the first to be put to the test as he was equal to the task, when a long range effort from Aubrey Modiba forced him into a desperate save.

Moments later, he was lucky not to conceded as Clayton Daniels’ header went agonisingly close, striking the upright with the keeper beaten all ends up.

At the other end, the hosts had chances of their own, but their execution only served to underline why they have been one of the sides with more matches played than goals scored in this season’s league campaign.

Free State Stars 1-1 Bloemfontein Celtic

The provincial derby between Free State Stars and Bloemfontein Celtic saw the two sides settle for a share of the spoils, as it ended 1-1 at Goble Park.

Stars were the brighter of the two sides throughout the first half, as Celtic spent the first 45 minutes running backwards, with goalkeeper, Patrick Tignyemb the man keeping them in the contests as he made some crucial saves.

Goodman Dlamini opened the scoring four minutes into the second half, but that lead was short-lived, as Victor Letsoalo levelled matters just five minutes later.
