ENUGU – Joseph Udedi, Enugu State Commissioner for Sports and Youth Development, has assured that the ongoing privatisation of moribund state-owned industries would reduce the high unemployment rate in the state.
Udedi, while assuring the citizens on that at a press conference in Enugu to mark the World Youth Day, tagged: “Safe Space for the Youth,” noted that since it is globally accepted that government should not engage in business, the Enugu government resolved to privatise state-owned enterprises as part of efforts to tackle unemployment.
The commissioner said the government recently appointed a committee headed by Cecilia Ezeilo, the deputy governor, to oversee the privatization of enterprises, such as Avop Vegetable Oil Nachi, Premier Cashew Industry, Oghe, Aluminium Industry at Ohebe Dim, Sunrise Floour Mills, Niger Gas, Niger Steel and others.
“The committee on privatization is ongoing. By Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi’s second tenure, we will finish privatization. The deputy governor is chairman of the privatization committee,” Udedi said.
Udedi, who disclosed that the government believed that competent young men and women in the state should be encouraged to start their own businesses, added that it had also created safe space for youth through political appointments, scholarships, skills acquisition and sports.
Earlier, Pascal Ugwu, the state chairman, National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), charged the youth to create their own safe spaces, instead of waiting for people.
Ugwu, who commended Governor Ugwuanyi for ensuring peace in Enugu State and making efforts to see that the youth were not idle, said: “If you are yearning for peace, then you must include the youth in political appointments. If we are good as political thugs, we are also good for political offices.”
On the forthcoming general elections, he urged the youths to do away with “money mentality”, saying they must not only obtain their Permanent Voter Cards but prepare to vie for offices.
