Santa Maria – 27 October – It has began today in Praia the trial of Antonio Ribeiro, known as Antany, the only suspect, though confessed, accused of killing 11 people in the military unit of Monte Tchota on 25 April this year.
The trial stems open to the public, with a large crowd outside the building wishing to attend the hearings. Many people, including family and friends are complaining about the lack of places.
One of Antany’s sisters, Carla Baessa, said this morning to the media that she considers this trial a ‘facade’ and hopes that justice lays a “heavy hand” on her brother when he is found guilty.
Latest updates report the hearing session this morning going accordingly to expected, with Antany’s defense appealing to a commuted sentence on Antany due to his good behavoior as a soldier.
The defendant himself told the judge he had nothing to say in his defense. It was limited to apologize to the nation and families affected.
António Ribeiro, a young man trained for combat, is accused of executing 11 people (eight military colleagues and three civilians) at Monte Tchota military quarter in Santiago, on dawn and morning of 25 April.
He left spot heavily armed with several machine guns and ammunition, and was captured covert in the center of the capital Praia.
