First the Nigerian team for the Rio 2016 Olympics that is on-going in Brazil was stuck in Atlanta USA as the Nigerian government could not afford their transport fare to Rio in Brazil.
While the sportsmen where helpless in Atlanta for days, a staff of the Delta Airlines came to their rescue and the they were finally airlifted to Brazil just few hours before their first match.
Having heard of the resilience of the players, A kind Japanese surgeon named Katsuya Takasu promised the Nigerian Olympic football team $300,000.
When the time was approaching for the Katsuya to hand the money to the boys, the Nigerian Government through the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) started lobbying to hijack the money Katsuya promised the boys.
The attempt by the Nigeria Football Federation to hijack the money the Japanese Doctor promised to give to the Dream Team was frustrated by John Mikel Obi.
When it was revealed that the federation wanted the money to augment their income, Mikel Obi told them that the money was for the boys and that if the boys were not PAID the money directly, or if there is not a commitment to pay the money directly to the boys, that they shall boycott the third place match.
Mikel also went to the Japanese Doctor and told him of the need to personally give the money to the players.
The federation did not want a further embarrassment so they had to let go and the boys were given personal cheques by the doctor.
That awkward moment when a country has to depend on a single foreign individual to sponsor a national team, then you know that things are really wrong.
