According to Sahara Reporters, Buhari has invited all the editors of the newspapers in Nigeria for a meeting.
In a letter signed by Garba Shehu, the presidency will take care of the feeding, accommodation and transport of the editors.
Sahara reporters also said that a handsome package from the presidency awaits the editors that attend.
The meeting has become necessary over the negativism the government has assumed in recent times but what the government fails to understand is that in Nigeria today, the newspapers no longer control public opinion. Anybody with a phone that has internet and have people that follows him, is more powerful than the newspapers.
That person just need to have credibility and once he post news, people believe him and share his news more than newspapers.
Some newspapers like The Nation newspaper, and some TV station like TVC have lost credibility in the eyes of several Nigerians due to their open partisanship.
So even if the presidency intends to bribe the editors to disseminate only favourable news for the government, then the govt need to bribe everyone with a phone and data because those people are more powerful than the newspaper editors.
Those people can bring down a useless govt faster than the newspapers because once the people perceive that the newspapers spread falsehood to support the govt, the people will abandon the papers.
