Nigeria: 24 year old Christian Killed by Moslems for alleged Blasphemy on Facebook

A 24 years old young enterprising Igbo boy named Methodus Emmanuel Chimaijem was brutally murdered by a host of matchet-brandishing marauding angry youths in the nigerian north-central State called Niger State.

There was heavy pandemonium at Pandogari in Rafi Local Government Area of Niger state on May 29th 2016. An eye witness who pleaded anonymity because of the insecurity of lives and property in Nigeria reported to Afroinsider.

He stated that the victim was in his house in Rafi when angry mob chanting alahu akbar forced their way into his home, pounced on him and started inflicting all manner of injuries on him with sticks and matchets.

However, four members of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) who got a tip-off of what was going on, rushed to the venue. As the 4 Gallant NSCDC members forced their way to quel the crisis the mob decended on them and lynched the 4 of them at the spot.

The marauding angry mob proceeded to loot many shops belonging to Christians and burn them down. Also three family houses belong to Igbos and two churches were looted and burnt to the grounded according to the reports.

However,  Police reports from Niger state police command indicates that the mayhem was as a result of an alleged blasphemous post made on popular social media outlet Facebook.

The report indicates that Mr Methodus was accused by the mob of posting blasphemy against the religion of Islam on his Facebook page. His moslem facebook friends leaked the information which infuriated the angry youths in the area which has about 95% Moslem population.

According to Niger State Police command Public Relations Officer, ASP Bala, there has been on going inquiries to what caused the gruesome incident. Police is pleading to the members of the public who has information as to the whereabout of the culprits to come forward.

However, about 32 suspects have been arrested in connection with the violence.

According to a statement issued by the assistant director of army public relations, Major NC Agwu, on Monday May 30:

“At about 6pm yesterday,  May 29, one Mr Methodus Chimaije Emmanuel, a 24-year-old trader based in Pandogari, Rafi LGA of Niger state was attacked and killed by a mob in the town on allegation of posting a blasphemous statement about Prophet Muhammad on the social media.
Troops of 31 Artillery Brigade of 1 Division, Nigerian army on operation MESA quickly intervened and restored law and order while a dusk to down curfew was imposed in the town.


Early this morning however, the rioters embarked on further violence, looting shops and blocking the Lagos – Kaduna Road, a major artery connecting the northern and southern parts of the country. Again, troops in conjunction with the personnel of Nigeria Police and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) took control of the situation to forestall escalation of violence and any threat to the peace in the town”

Meanwhile, reports from the army spokesperson did not mention the death of 4 NSCDC members. The Nigerian Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC) could not be contacted to throw more light on the violence which allegedly claimed the lives of four of it’s men at the time of filing this.
