Submission Guidelines


Once Upon a Time in Liberia is a VTP first anthology to be published in paperback and ebook formats. The following guidelines are for submission for publication. We are accepting submissions from November 1, 2016 to November 1, 2017 from anywhere in the world. Send us your best work, we’d love to read it.


How to submit: Submission(s) must be sent through our email as an attachment; to along with author’s bio and photo (clear background) What we’re looking for: VTP seeks good narratives in the form of short stories, essays and poems.

Here’s what we want in your story or essay or poem: Fictional emotion-filled trouble, cultural-honesty, social ills, or romance, Connection to the characters and cultures, Stories about people and places, rather than about writing itself ? Theme is strictly to Liberia or Liberian. ? The setting must be in any of Liberia’s fifteen (15) counties.

RIGHTS: We ask for first-publication rights for online and print, this means that the story/essay/poem should not have appeared anywhere else, either in print or online. (This includes publication on an author’s own website.) When we publish a story, we ask for a period of one year exclusivity (twelve months), and the right to keep the story in print and online.

WORD COUNT: We consider stories/essays that are between 1,500 and 10,000 words in length (please do not send anything longer or shorter than this) and poetry, freestyle, to fit two-page max. (Poems should fit on no more than two pages)

THERE’S A DEADLINE: November 1, 2017. The sooner you send in your work, the sooner it’s edited.

ELIGIBILITY: We accept submissions from all authors; Liberian, non-Liberian, aspiring and seasoned authors. MULTIPLE AND SIMULTANEOUS SUBMISSIONS: It’s fine to send us more than one story/essay/poem, however, please DO NOT send them together in one document. Submission(s) must be sent through our email as an attachment; to We aim to respond to all submissions within two weeks. We do understand if you want to submit to more than one magazine at a time; however, please let us know if a story you’ve submitted to us has been accepted elsewhere! If you’re waiting for a reply from us, please check your junk mail folder, as sometimes emails make their way there. If there’s nothing there, email us: It would be very helpful if you could include your submission title.

SUBMISSION FEE/PAYMENT: We do not charge a submission fee nor do we pay for any submission. For now, contributors receive two complimentary paperback copies and is eligible to purchase
