On Monday, Lagos State Government announced that properties worth N12.8bn were lost to fire tragedies, while properties worth N76.9bn were saved from destruction in 980 fire calls between May 2017 and April 2018.   The government also said no fewer than 84 people were lost to the incidents. The Commissioner for Special Duties and Inter-governmental Relations, Oluseye Oladejo, stated this at the ongoing 2018 Ministerial Press Briefing, adding that out of 1,282 emergency calls received during the period under review, 980 were fire calls.   He said, “Within the period under review, the state government rehabilitated and upgraded 225 fire hydrants that were initially below ground level and installed 50 new ones to link the mini/micro waterworks in the state. The hydrants have been providing easy access to water supply for firemen during firefighting and rescue operations.”   The commissioner said plans had been concluded to commence the removal of all abandoned vehicles on roads, adding that the move was aimed at addressing traffic congestion and averting security challenges associated with abandoned vehicles. “In line with the plan, the governor has approved the creation of a vehicle recovery unit to solely see to the removal of abandoned and accident vehicles on roads. For the smooth take-off of the unit, the governor also directed that equipment and towing trucks of various capacities be procured to be able to remove vehicles of whatever make and size,” he added.   Oladejo also said the Lagos State Safety Commission, as part of its drive to improve safety in the state, had established a safety training institute to ensure continuous capacity building for safety stakeholders in public and private sectors.  The post Lagosians lostN12.8bn properties to fire in the past year State government appeared first on Linda Ikeji Blog.
