INED survey: the majority of the inhabitants of Mayotte were not born on the island

A survey carried out by INED, the National Institute for Demographic Studies, in Mayotte in 2015, reveals that more than one in two adults living in Mayotte was not born there. The majority comes from Anjouan, a neighboring island of the Comoros. Emigration is also strong in the 101st French department.

By 2015, more than one in two adults living in Mayotte was not born. This is revealed by an unpublished survey by INED, the National Institute for Demographic Studies, carried out in Mayotte between September 2015 and March 2016. Migration, birth and family are at the heart of this survey which reveals that the natives of Mayotte Are minority in the department. (Look at the explanations of Mayotte 1st).
