Boniface Omondi’s late goal sent Gor Mahia joint second in the Kenyan Premier League table as they come from a goal down to beat Kakamega Homeboyz 2-1 at the Kenyatta Stadium on Thursday.

Hassan Oktay fielded a fringe side with the main focus on a must-win Sunday’s Caf Confederation Cup match against Angolan Petro Atletico at the Kasarani Stadium.

Oktay was forced to break some rules when he named only four players on the bench with up to seven new faces in the starting line-up, but the fresh legs still did the jobs nonetheless after the Kenyan Premier League refused to postpone the fixtures to allow Gor Mahia adequately prepare for the weekend Caf match.

Homeboyz took the lead in the 57th minute through Luke Namulanda but the reigning Kenyan champions came from a goal down to squeeze all the three points; pushing their tally of points to 32, same as Bandari and just one behind leaders Sofapaka.

Burundian import Francis Mustapha came off the bench to inspire K’Ogalo after he took advantage of the Homeboyz goalmouth melee to level the scores in the 66th minute.

The record Kenyan champions found themselves leading just two minutes later when Omondi’s powerful shot deflected off Festus Okiring for a goal that handed the 17-time champions maximum points.

Homeboyz tried to respond with a late rally, but Gor Mahia, who have two games at hand, jealously guarded their slim lead to pocket all the three points.
