The Deputy leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Mazi Uche Mefor lambasts Nigerian government and Garba Shehu in particular for referring to the IPOB as terrorist organization. Mefor refereed to Muhammadu Buhari’s spokesperson, Garba Shehu as a product of symptomatic institutional decay.
He made this known while being interviewed by Turkey based English language television station, TRTWORLD on Newsmakers.
Before the interview began, Garba Shehu, a spokesperson for the Nigerian President, Muhammadu Buhari was seen saying that the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has been declared a terrorist organization by the Nigerian government.
“It is engaged in terror activities, illegal taxation, use of weapons against the armed forces and the police and attack on the national institutions,” said Garba Shehu.
However, the interviewer highlighted the fact that calls for self determination is sweeping across the globe, from northern Iraq to northern Spain, but one area that receives less attention is the Southern Nigeria where the Biafran people live.
“The Biafran People are a distinct linguistic and cultural ethnic group among many in Nigeria. They are pushing to form a separate state but they have been labelled a terrorist organization,” the interviewer said.
He reiterated that Kanu’s lawyer had said that the Nigerian military took Kanu away when they invaded his home in September.
Interviewer: I am joined now from london by the deputy leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Uche Mefor. He is also the second in command of what is called the great army of Biafra. Uche Mefor, thanks for joining us, good to have you on the Newsmakers. So your leader Nnamdi Kanu didn’t show up in court, do you have any idea where he is?
Uche Mefor: No I don’t have an idea, the Nigerian military should be able to provide an answer to that and so every inquiry regarding the Supreme leader of Biafra, who is also my leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, should be directed to the Nigerian military.
They were the people that unleashed terror and mayhem on his residence, in the process killing and spilling the blood of a cross-section of Biafrans youths. A number of them were taken away and a reasonable number were mowed down. It was at this juncture that we lost contact with our leader.
And so it’s only very fair to direct that question to Nigerian military, to Muhammadu Buhari, the arch genocidist, the terrorist who is using state resources in unleashing terror on innocent, indigenous civilian populations.
Interviewer: But you heard, Garba Shehu, Buhari’s spokesperson, in the build up to us talking, where he said, it is clear they consider you terrorist.
And this is in line with 5 other state governors of the region because, they said, the group uses weapons against the state, illegal taxations and attacking of national institutions. What’s your response to that?
Uche Mefor: Well, terrorists behave in a systematic pattern and if we are terrorist, maybe I should be one of the terrorist. You are talking to me now, you know my address, you know where I’m coming from. And the indigenous people of Biafra for the avoidance of doubt are are indigenous to the land of Biafra.
They are the original owners of the land. They are everywhere, they are legitimate in every country where they are. They go about there normal duties. They engage meaningfully in the lives of the communities where they are.
They have friends, they have relatives, they have families, they go to work, they are professionals in their fields. We have lawyers, we have doctors, we have captains of industries and of course we have religious leaders.
We have ordinary people, men, women and children. They are everywhere, they have not killed anybody. If we are terrorists, then we shouldn’t be coming out in the public and mingling with ordinary people.
As a matter of fact, Garba shehu is a product of symptomatic institutional decay that Nigeria has became and has been dished out in recent times. It is about official deception in highest quarters.
The Nigerian government and officials do not know what they have actually come to do. All they know is about what they can gain from whatever, they are doing. They don’t put the interest of the people at heart.
They are opportunist and as you can see, Garba Shehu has said all he has said but from your own vintage position you have seen that IPOB are innocent, they are unarmed, they are non violent. All we want is referendum.
All we want is a democratic process of referendum to ascertain where the people of Biafra want to be. If they want to be in Nigeria or Biafra.
