Stoke welcomes a Manchester City side with almost three times as many points as them coming into this round 30 game at the Britannia Stadium.
Coming into this fixture, Stoke find themselves at 19th place bottom to last with 27 points. Fifty-one points above them, we find the Sky Blues (Man city) in the first place – will David stand a chance against the Mancunian Goliath?
After the last round beating of Chelsea, Manchester City are on course to break Chelsea’s record of 95 points in one season – a record set in 2004-05 under José Mourinho. However, Pep Guardiola says he is not interested in records, but trophies.
On the potential record, he simply stated:
“Against Stoke City we are going to try and play like we play all season. That’s what I want to see.”
Stoke has toughened up in recent weeks and have been hard to beat. In the position they are, however, draws are a small comfort. What better way to bolster their confidence before a difficult end to the season than a win against the mighty Premier League (PL) champions-elect?
Players to watch: With seven PL goals and six assists, Xherdan Shaqiri has been Stoke’s standout player this season. Scoring three in his last four, he’s the one Stoke City’s prolific striker Sergio Aguero has somewhat uncharacteristically failed to score in his last two starts.
After being rested against Basel last Wednesday, he should be ready to add to his tally of 21 PL goals here.
Stat attack: The reverse fixture at the Etihad was quite the spectacle – City thrashed Stoke 7-2!
In the last four PL games between the two sides, Stoke has conceded 15 goals, an average of 3.8 a game.
