In a rare show of human kindness, the Vice Chancellor and Senate of Delta State University (DELSU) Abraka, Delta State, on Wednesday donated a total of N2.05million for the corrective surgery, prosthesis and tuition of Karimot Lawal, a physically-challenged 300-level student of University of Osun (UNIOSUN).

Speaking at the presentation of the cheques which took place at the Ladi Lawal Press Centre, Ikeja, Lagos, the DELSU Vice Chancellor, Professor Victor Peretomode, said the financial support and succour to the third-year student of History and International Relations of UNIOSUN, was DELSU’s response to an appeal in a national newspapers.

The VC, represented at the event by the DELSU Deputy Vice Chancellor (Administration), Professor Roseline Aziza, stated that the Senate of DELSU was inspired to help Karimot after he read her story and narrated same to the Senate members.

Karimot had an accident which led to her losing a foot at the age of five but was determined to realise her dreams despite the fact that “her physical challenge exposed her to humiliation, discrimination, physical, emotional and psychological agony.”

According to him, “In spite of her condition, her story sounded heroic and inspiring as she labored hard to earn money no matter how little to be able to go to university. The highlight of the story was an appeal for financial assistance for her to seek the right medical help and buy a prosthesis costing one million and eight hundred thousand naira (N1,800,000).”

Prof Aziza explained that the VC “presented Karimot’s story to the Senate of the University at its 156th regular meeting on the 30th of April. The University Senate unanimously decided to intervene and end Karimot’s pain of 16 years by raising the needed money through donations by members.

“After dispatching the DELSU Public Relations Officer (PRO) to confirm the story, the Senate set up a seven-man committee which reached out to Karimot to deliver the donation.”

She said: “As part of our University’s determination to advance the cause of humanity, we are presenting Miss Karimot Lawal with the total sum of one million and eight hundred thousand naira (N1,800,000) which is the full sum for the prosthesis as well as another two hundred and fifty thousand naira (N250,000) in order for her to complete her university education without further stress.”

In his remarks, Dr Adesola Adesote, a lecturer in Karimot’s Department at UNIOSUN, who also represented the UNIOSUN VC and the Head of Department at the occasion, praised the DELSU VC and his wife, Dr. Otaroghene Peretomode, who was also present at the event, for his gesture and that of the DELSU Senate.

In her vote of thanks, Karimot thanked the donors for their kindness, praying that God would bless them for their kindness towards her.
