Congolese warlord Katanga aka Simba the Lion may be sent back to prison after completing his 12 years’ prison sentence by the international criminal court ICC. His Sentence was reduced due to good behavior in November by the international criminal court based in Hague. Katanga was brought back to Kinshasa last year to complete his prison term. He was set to be released in January 18th but unfortunately for him the Congolese authorities announced that they will be charging him for other crimes. On Wednesday, he and five others are accused of crimes against humanity and unlawfully participating in an insurrection movement in a place called Ituri in the southern part of Congo near the Ugandan border. An estimated 60,000 people died in the violence from 1999 to 2007. Enslavements, rapes, killings and other sorts of atrocious acts were committed during the violence. All those who committed these acts were not brought to book until 2004. Meanwhile, a human right group has argued that he was not given sufficient time to prepare for his case. As a result, he was not given fair hearing. However, Katanga’s legal representatives asked the court to drop the charges against him. He was previously accused by the Congolese authorities to have played a role in the killing of nine United Nations Peace Keeping Force members. However, this was not mentioned in the hearing on Wednesday.
Congolese Warlord Katanga may go back to Jail.
