The National Chairman of the United Progressives Party, UPP, Chekwas Okorie, has reacted to the call by Indigenous People Biafra, IPOB to Boycott all upcoming elections across South Eastern region of Nigeria, mainly November 18th Anambra Governorship election.
The UPP Chairman said that the call for “no election” in Anambra and the South East is illogical and “stupid.”
IPOB has been demanding referendum from government at the center to enable them determine their fate in Nigeria.
Responding to press in Awka, the Anambra state capital on Wednesday, Okorie said there were no articulated and acceptable reasons for insisting that election must not take place in the state and the region in general.
He also noted that the Federal Government cannot agree to referendum in the South East because it’s not contained in the constitution.
In his words, “To think that some young people, some of them educated are campaigning against Igbo participation in an election is unfortunate.
“Moreover, the reason for non participation has not being articulated by anyone of them, there is no reason they have given that makes sense at all.
“Saying that you want referendum and that government should give you referendum is so pedestrian an argument.
“Government cannot give you referendum because it does not exist in the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria where we belong.
“The only way you can go about it is to participate in democracy, elect a government that can pursue your wishes and aspirations.
“It is a stupid thing to say that there will be no election in Anambra.”
