N200m tax default: Gombe branch of Fidelity Bank to be sealed

GombeFOR its failure and continuous evasion to pay the sum of N200m tax over the years, Gombe State Board of Internal Revenue has issued a 30-day non-compliance notice to the Gombe branch of Fidelity Bank PLC in what it describes as moves to boost internally generated revenue.

Executive Director, Tax Operations of the Internal Revenue Board, Mohammed Musa, told Journalists at the bank premises on Wednesday that if the Bank fails to respond within the next 30 days, the Board will have no option than to secure a court order and permanently seal the Bank premises.

According to Mohammed Musa, “Fidelity Bank has been violating our tax laws, we have been writing them severally and they have chosen to ignore our demand notices.”

He further said that: “There was no feedback from the bank after the last notice and if they fail to comply or get in touch with the Board, the next step that we will take is to go and get a court order and then come and seal the bank permanently.”

Several efforts by Correspondents of media organizations in Gombe to get an official reaction from some of the most senior staff of the branch office of the bank proved abortive as reporters were made to understand that only the bank’s cooperate headquarters has the mandate to respond to such matters.

The operation was carried out with armed Policemen, media and other relevant bodies.

It will be recalled that the Gombe State Board of Internal Revenue, through its Executive Chairman, Alhaji Adamu Damji, has embarked on a massive revenue drive to improve on the revenue base of the State and compliment allocations from the Federal Government.
